Ancona is the only city in Italy where the sun both rises and sets over the sea. Thanks to its unique amphitheater-like position on the Adriatic, it bears the ancient name “Ankon.” A crossroads of peoples and routes, it has long been known as the “Gateway to the East,” thanks to its historic port that has connected Italy to the eastern Mediterranean since Roman times.
To discover the best of the city, we recommend the “from sea to sea” walk, from Passetto to the port: an itinerary rich in history, nature, and beauty.
The route begins at the Monument to the Fallen, a symbol of remembrance overlooking the sea,
with its white stairways descending among rocks and sea caves, immersed in pinewood.
From there, along Viale della Vittoria, you reach the lively
Corso Garibaldi, perfect for a break among shops, cafés, and local spots.
The historic center welcomes you with the evocative Fountain of the Thirteen Spouts, the lively Piazza del Plebiscito, the City Museum, and the prestigious Teatro delle Muse, restored to its former splendor.
Heading down toward the old port, you can admire the imposing Arch of Trajan, a witness to imperial grandeur.
The exhibition held in Ancona in 1998/99 documented the figure of
Trajan on the occasion of the nineteenth centenary of his accession to the imperial throne.
A reconstruction of daily, religious, and economic life that foreshadows modern Europe.
Climbing Colle Guasco, you’ll find the splendid Romanesque church of Santa Maria della Piazza and, higher up, the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, patron of the city, offering one of the most breathtaking views of the Adriatic coast. Nearby, the Diocesan Museum tells centuries of faith and art.
Among the archaeological treasures are the remains of the Roman forum and the ancient amphitheater, which in summer hosts performances and reenactments.
And if you love green spaces, Ancona will surprise you with the Cardeto Park, suspended between history and nature, and with the Citadel, an ancient fortress from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city and the sea.
