Just 7 km from Porto Recanati, perched on the top of a hill almost 300 meters above sea level, lies Recanati, a fascinating town in the Marche region, famous for its deep connection with the poet Giacomo Leopardi and for its spectacular views stretching from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennines.
The best way to discover it is to start from Palazzo Leopardi, the poet’s birthplace,
overlooking the charming little square of the “Saturday in the Village,” still inhabited
by the family’s descendants.
Inside, visitors can admire personal objects, original manuscripts,
and the imposing paternal library with over 20,000 volumes.
From here, following the marked path, you reach Mount Tabor, famously known
as the “Hill of Infinity,” immortalized by Leopardi’s verses: one of the most
breathtaking viewpoints in the entire region.
The beating heart of the city is Piazza Leopardi, dominated by the statue
dedicated to the poet and the elegant Neoclassical Town Hall.
A few steps away stands the Torre del Borgo, dating back to the 13th century,
the only surviving testimony of the old medieval town hall.
Strolling along Corso Persiani, you’ll come across the majestic Cathedral of San Flaviano and the Diocesan Museum. A little further on, Villa Colloredo Mels houses the Civic Art Gallery, home to a valuable collection of works, including masterpieces by Lorenzo Lotto.
But Recanati is also a city of vibrant and contemporary culture. Worth a visit are the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Painters of Emigration, the curious Oliviero Pigini Guitar Museum, and the innovative “Silicio Inside,” dedicated to the world of silicon and technology.
