The Bay of Portonovo and its beach are among the most famous tourist spots of the Conero Riviera
and the entire Adriatic coast.
It lies at the foot of Mount Conero, where the mountain plunges into the sea, offering
an unspoiled nature with a beach of white pebbles and gravel, and turquoise, clear, crystalline waters.
The success of the Bay of Portonovo is due to the vision of some inhabitants of Poggio, a district of Ancona
located just above Portonovo, who immediately understood the tourist potential of the place
and opened the first refreshment points in 1929.
Today their children and grandchildren carry on the tradition: the beach of Portonovo is characterized
by the presence of several beach clubs and excellent seafood restaurants, where visitors can enjoy
the famous “moscioli di Portonovo,” mussels harvested only along this stretch of coast.
They are a delicacy of the local cuisine, protected by the Slow Food presidium.
An annual event, *Mosciolando*, is dedicated to them and takes place right in the Bay of Portonovo.
In addition to the equipped beach with umbrellas, deck chairs, and sunbeds, there are also three large
free beach areas, all easily accessible.
Those who wish to stay in Portonovo can book a room in one of the three hotels in the Bay
or in the campsite by the sea.
The Bay of Portonovo also offers visitors two brackish water lakes with rich flora and fauna,
a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts.
It is also possible to see the Watchtower (Torre De Bosis) standing above the sea,
or visit the stunning Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo, one of the most interesting examples
of Romanesque architecture in central Italy, open during specific times of the year.
